romney to move forward although the most recent contest has not done anything for the economic story or market story, simon. >> interesting as we get more details of the industrial policies, we will talk about this later in the program, you have, for example, the white house and indiedrich santorum saying there should be cuts in taxes for manufacturing and we will debate whether that could do the business to a greater extent on the job front, generated 400,000 manufacturing jobs coming out of the recession, nowhere near what we lost. >> simon, keep in mind, we have only employed at this point in the u.s., only have about 12 million people working in manufacturing, out of a labor force of 150 million, a population of 300 million. you can throw a lot of incentives at manufacturing and get some jobs back but still not going to be the overriding theme here, we need more sectors and today's service sector showed, employment down from the prior month, indicating caution. we are going to need more broad-based gains beyond manufacturing her to keep job growth growing and growing forward. >>

mitt romney as he compared the start of the general election campaign to shaking up an etch-a-sketch. according to meredith whitney in our most recent conversation this week, it's going to get worse before it gets better. >> there was been every effort to prevent the tidal wave of default. it's going to happen sooner or later. look, it's happening at an accelerating pace. >> so there has been a lot of criticism around meredith whitney's call. is she right about the danger in muni bonds? joining us out of the rbc capital trading floor, getting the guys behind me, rbc trading floor. chief u.s. economist. thank you so much for joining us. what do you make of the view on the muni situation? >> we expect that to be the case going forward. and we are concerned about the fiscal health of local governments but most of them will manage their affairs in an appropriate way. if they run into financial trouble, it's our view that most of the states will institute the kind of oversight and dimension mechanisms necessary to manage the problem going -- you know, as it arises. >> when they first made

when you don't have the support that some others have, like mitt romney? >> know, i don't think debating the issues do. the democrats did it last go round and it didn't destroy their party. the biggest thing is what is the image of the republican party. if the image is they are promoting only one thing, that obama is too weak and we need more war, more spending, more invasion of privacy, deal with birth control pills and on and on, some of these things can hurt. but that the whole system. but if it is the debaste issues because i disagree with other candidates or spending, actually i want it cut spending, and none of the others have indicated they could cut anything. i think that's important. it doesn't help obama. it means that you have to have a debate within the republican party. i thought the republicans would want somebody that would really want it cut and be conservative and balance the budget. that of course is what my platform is all about. >> would you consider running for vice presidential nomination? >> i wouldn't run for it. i wouldn't consider that. >> well, no onin

poked at his wealthy rival, mitt romney's, inability, or difficulty in connecting with average people. >> i think there are a lot of successful people in this country who connect amazingly well with the american people. one of the reasons they are successful is because they connect well. i don't think that's the reason governor romney was successful. it's because he connected well with the american public, he was successful for other reasons. it's hard sometimes to go from one sector, or one area and transfer those skills into another area. and that's why you say, well, you know, i have business experience, that makes me the pest person. there are certain skills that business people have that are in fact helpful when it comes to being a political leadership. but there are skills also that those who were involved in public life bring to the table that are also important skills to governing this country. and i would just sugst that governor romney, like every candidate, has flaws. i do, he does. and the question is, who's the best person with the least amount of flaws and most amount of
